It seems to be in great condition and is basically exactly what I want but the KBB for an "excellent" condition car at the mileage is half the asking price

KBB is worthless for (NA) Miata pricing.

I don't like the wheels, and it looks like a bumper cover off of a later NA and the rockers have had some paint work. Has the timing belt been replaced?

Looks a little shaky to me.

I emailed the lister but he hasn't gotten back. I was going to ask about the timing belt though. IF you don't mind spending the time could you explain how you could tell the bumper cover is off a newer car and that the rockers had paint work? Going back through the ad and trying to google images of stock NAs has failed me.

The rocker panels would have originally been black and the "toilet seat" emblem on the nose is incorrect for a '92. Neither necessarily indicates a problem but the car was most likely painted. Looks like a nice car.

Do you like the modifications such as the short antenna, wheels, Racing Beat intake, and the door speaker covers? The car has also been repainted at least in the rocker area. They were black from the factory. I would look for accident damage and/or rust. Timing belt change and other major servicing due in the near future. Driver seat is far from mint. Cruise control servo has been relocated to fit RB intake. These are just a few things I can see from the ad. This Miata requires a close inspection. An original Miata in excellent condition with no immediate needs could fetch up to $5500. I would not pay anything near the asking price for this car.

Car looks like it has ABS, judging by what's going on on the passenger side of the firewall. I believe ABS was pretty rare back then, on Miatas.

Looks nice and clean and probably drives very well, if it is as described. A repaint isn't always a bad thing. A quality repaint is better than chipped and dinged original paint, I'd say. As others said, if it is a repaint, make sure that's all it is, and not part of a major accident or rust repair. I also don't like the wheels, but they can be sold and replaced with something else that might even cost less. Or maybe you do like them and want to keep them.

It's probably hard to find a really clean, rust free Miata in PA, so if that car is as advertised, I might consider it, even if it is a bit overpriced. Could probably drive it for a few years and not lose much at all when reselling. Perhaps not a $6000 car, but almost definitely not a $3000. I'd check this one out.

Also, what's up with the VIN?

Wow thanks for all the information everybody. The seller has texted me back, and we are going to talk on the phone this evening, where I plan to bring up some of the things mentioned here. Assuming I don't hear anything to scary, an he seems willing to play ball I'll probably see the car Sunday.

Thanks again everyone, I will update once I know more

Edit:
Out of curiosity I just ran the VIN provided in the ad and it is coming up as a Harley Davidson Sportster: http://www.vindecoderz.com/EN/check-lookup/1hd4cam101k112920
That seems pretty fishy

Maybe fishy, maybe just a mistake. Maybe he was looking at the title for his Harley instead of the Miata. I once signed over the title for my Scion when I was selling my WRX.

KBB is worthless .

fixed.

KBB and all the rest can insert whatever figures they want but it still comes down to what the seller/buyer think the car is worth.

This is the correct VIN for the car: JM1NA351XP0401359

Carfax checked clean, 5 owners.

The ad says he is the 3rd owner. Also, most of the modifications he has done add little or nothing to the value, and may subtract, like the oversize (heavy) rims, aftermarket intake, which is sucking in hot air, which can cost horsepower, repaint (can hide rust, accident damage-bondo, etc,), so just check it out carefully if it is what you want.
