Have wondered how our aging can be slowed so we can be vibrant as we age Did you know that we can become biologically younger as we get chronologically older? I am honored to have become certified on age management medicine by AMMG years ago, and to be part of the faculty at our Spring meeting in Miami this April. If you are in the healthcare field and want to expand your toolbox and make a difference for patients, this is a good meeting for you.#ammg #agemanagementmedicinegroup #longevity #womeninmedicine.

The biggest hospital in Denmark, Rigshospitalet, has signed an agreement to establish a university hospital with DTU and the other hospitals in the Copenhagen region. Today DTU and Rigshospitalet signed a strategic collaboration agreement with the aim of bringing digital and technological expertise to the patients within the framework of a university-hospital partnership."We are seeking a much stronger integration of medical, technological and digital competences, so we can learn from each other and realise the benefits of the many new advances in personalised medicine, diagnostics, and treatment. It is important that our staff will be able to work with new technologies and medical advances at the highest level." Rasmus Møgelvang, Director Rigshospitalet."We already see many examples where engineers, nurses and doctors work together. We want to establish a collaboration that enables new ideas and solutions to flourish. We think this can best be achieved through an organisation where it is normal, and not exceptional, that staff and students can work between the university and hospital in a seamless legal entity. " Anders Bjarklev, President DTU. The university hospital initiative was initiated at the request of the Regional Government who wish to realise the benefits of stronger strategic collaboration.

After a long week on the wards, how do I find any energy to keep up with the latest medical evidence?*Disclaimer* don't want to read the post? No worries - but if you're a clinician, click the link. I'm 99% sure it'll make you a more confident and engaged doctor. This is one of things I really struggled with after leaving medical school. All my clinical colleagues will recognise how little time we have for professional development - it's all about putting out fires! Unfortunately that limits our ability to keep up with the rapidly developing changes in our field. When I stumbled upon EvidenceAlerts late in my F1 year - I felt I was going backwards in a lot of ways. I knew my local guidelines inside out, but had no time to comb through the vast array of medical journals to find papers which might be relevant to me. EvidenceAlerts is a free service which sends you an email weekly/fortnightly/monthly with the biggest papers in any are of medicine you can think of! In an age of algorithms trying to read our mind, this website lets you personalise what you get notifications about, your current level of expertise in the field and lets you tweak your notifications at any time. I use it to:- Keep up with the biggest papers in paediatrics, wherever they're published- Find interesting papers to present at journal club- Keep up with developments across other fields - you never know when you might need them!Let me know if this helps you out or if you have any tools you like to use to keep up to date with the latest in your area of practice.

In a report carried out by Portuguese TV channel, RTP, as part of World Nurses' Day, the spotlight was also on a solution developed by Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS: a software-based solution designed to support clinical decision/action solutions for monitoring and treating wounds. This technology was developed in partnership with F3M and Universidade Católica Portuguesa - Centro Regional do Porto. At minute 18'28, you can see images of the application created by our researchers. Full report at https://lnkd.in/dJuQkGJR. The Clinical Wound Support solution was designed for two types of users: - a mobile application for healthcare providers in the area of wounds, capable of capturing images of wounds, including differentiated clinical information about them, which makes it possible to increase the effectiveness of wound monitoring and improve the reliability of its characterisation, as well as supporting the selection of the appropriate therapeutic intervention;- a web platform for health unit managers, responsible for integrating the data acquired in terms of wound evolution according to the therapy implemented, in order to identify the most promising options in terms of evaluation and management costs. The research is now continuing in order to validate the solution created, within the Health for Portugal project (#HfPT): https://lnkd.in/d-pZKnyG. #remarkabletechnology #impactinglives #woundsupport

“Whoever it was who claimed to have been educated mainly during the holidays must have been an Old Boy of my medical school.” Michael Simpson So the holidays are over and its back to school. Or work. Both will involve learning. Let’s hope we can make medical education better and more relevant than it was for Michael Simpson writing about his experiences! At BMJ Best Practice, we try to make our content as relevant and practical as possible. Here are some evidence-based and practical tips from BMJ Best Practice on the management of status epilepticus. - Follow your local protocol re benzodiazepines. High doses can cause reduced consciousness and respiratory depression. However, be aware that the biggest risk to respiratory function in status is ongoing seizures, as opposed to respiratory depression from benzodiazepines. - Non-epileptic seizures are the most important differential. Emergency anticonvulsants are not only ineffective but also potentially dangerous, putting patients at risk of respiratory depression, aspiration, and death.- Be aware that non-convulsive status is less common than convulsive status. It is easily missed.- Save serum and urine for future analysis, e.g. tox screen.BMJ Best Practice is freely available in the NHS in England, Scotland, and Wales. Please get in touch if you would like to find out how to make it available in your organisation - we can set up a trial.Last word on the BMJ Best Practice Clinical Champion Programme. 🌟 **Spotlight Achievement: Dr. Deborah Cook and the REVISE Trial** 🌟I am thrilled to share the groundbreaking work of Dr. Deborah Cook, a leading intensivist and researcher at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton and McMaster University, who is at the forefront of revolutionizing intensive care medicine. As the Director of Academic Affairs in the Department of Critical Care, holder of the prestigious St. Joseph's s-McMaster Critical Care Research Chair, and a Canada Research Chair in Intensive Care Medicine, Dr. Cook's contributions are nothing short of inspiring.🔍 **About the REVISE Trial:**The REVISE Trial is re-evaluating pantoprazole use to prevent upper gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding in ICU patients requiring mechanical ventilation. This study is pivotal, challenging the status quo and re-assessing the efficacy and safety of universal acid suppression in today's ICU settings. By aligning with the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki, the REVISE Trial ensures that even the most trusted interventions undergo rigorous scrutiny to maximize patient care quality, efficiency, and accessibility.🤝 **A Collaborative Effort:**Its collaborative nature sets the REVISE Trial apart, involving over 4,800 patients across 68 centers in 8 countries. This trial is a testament to Dr. Cook's leadership in fostering multi-disciplinary, multi-center ICU research, emphasizing the importance of patient and family involvement in developing meaningful outcomes.🌍 **Impact on Global ICU Practices:**The findings from the REVISE Trial have the potential to significantly influence public health, professional guidelines, and policy-making for ICUs worldwide. This research doubles the evidence on the topic and addresses the public's concerns and expectations regarding ICU care.#CriticalCare #ICUResearch #MedicalInnovation #REVISETrial #HealthcareHeroes

On Saturday I had the honour and enormous responsibility of speaking at the 8th Pharmacy Students' Congress, organised by the Portuguese Pharmacy Students' Association (APEF - Associação Portuguesa de Estudantes de Farmácia), "A More Citizen-Focused Health System".With the theme "The Portuguese Health System: the importance of collaboration and multidisciplinarity", the keynote speak I was asked to give focused on characterising and describing the evolution of the national health system, highlighting the main aspects of the ongoing transformation and the challenges we face in the future, highlighting opportunities for pharmacists.I reflected upon the ongoing transition to a system model mainly based on local health units. This could be an opportunity to promote the integration of care, beyond hospitals and health centres, and to gain financial efficiency, given the right financial incentives and strong leadership (with autonomy!). I have advocated the introduction and promotion of new models of team organization and functioning, based on task-shifting and skill-sharing of competences and responsibilities between health professionals, as a guarantee of efficiency and capability of the system. In fact, in a scenario of shortages of health professionals, that is generally affecting the whole of Europe, policies and interventions to enhance and reorganise human resources in health, in all areas, are structural to the survival of health systems.Mainly I intended to stimulate critical thinking among future pharmacists, my colleagues, who will perform in a more demaning environment but also with great opportunities. The future is ours to believe in.
